Reflection from Terry

So much of spirituality has something to do with pondering, anguishing over, dancing with, and wrestling with the intriguing and provocative question:

Is there anything ‘Out There?’ —

Is there anything ‘In Here?’ —

Is there anything bigger than I am? —

Is there anything that I can appeal to? —

Is there anything that I can pray to? —

Is there anything that I can ache toward? —

Is there anything — any one — that I can ask to hold me?

The root of the word absurd is . . . deaf. Which begs the question: Is appealing absurd? Is praying absurd? Is aching absurd? Is asking to be held absurd?

Clearly there is no definitive, provable ANSWER to these queries — And — my hunch and conviction regarding the existence of some kind of Presence — My hunch and conviction regarding the existence of a Really Excellent Holder who welcomes our appeals and prayers has invariably come in the form of lived experiences which then, gracefully, transform into Stories. . . Thus: ‘Stories and Other Things Holy!’

Upon re-membering and retelling this Story — this ‘Stories and Other Things Holy’ Inaugural Story, I was infused with a deep-felt sense of confidence and peace… “Oh yeah, there is something — someone out there — and in here — holding me — holding us… One Eternal Breath at a time!”

Pray God that this confidence and peace prove to be a bit contagious. Bless us, Oh Lord, for these…

  1. Does anything about this story particularly: Move you? Surprise you? Touch you? Stir something In you? Comfort you? Provoke you? Challenge you? Shake you up? Wake you up? Heal you? Ache you? Nourish you? Remind you?
  2. As you are able to - suspend judgment and critique: "What if I am suspended between one breath of God?"
  3. Comment on the Significance of Stories: Stories make ideas come to life... Stories animate the ideas... Stories foster encounters... Historical stories become contemporary when told well... Stories have the power to heal and transform...
  4. Imagine your community/family/life without stories...
