A Reflection from Terry

This story brings to mind the wisdom shared by Brother David Steindl-Rast:

“There is nothing more serious than play. Children know that. And the child within us never forgets it. To seek seriously is to seek playfully. Beauty is useless and superfluous, like all great things in life. Is not the universe itself a totally superfluous firework of divine glory, and therefore so priceless? Useful things have a price. But who can assess the value of a poem in dollars and cents? Who can put a price on a kiss? If God’s glory is all that matters, then the totally useless is not to be relegated to spare moments once in a blue moon. We may have to learn that the useless deserves prime time. Acknowledging this truth could lead to a transformation by Divine glory more drastic than we’re prepared for. It might turn our values topsy-turvy.”

The dad in this story embodies this wisdom—"Unless we become like little children"—we may forget to “hunt EVERYTHING,” and as a result, miss so much beauty, grace, and wonder.

Grace-ercises

  1. Reflect on Your Response
Did any part of the story—or the discussion that followed—move you? Comfort you? Surprise you? Awaken something within? Take some time to rest in, or wrestle with, this feeling as part of your experience of the story.
  2. Observe Children at Play
A few times this week, closely observe young children around ages 3-6. What do you notice about their approach to the world? What thoughts and feelings arise in you as you watch?
  3. Rediscover the World as a Child
Following the exercise above, try imagining yourself as one of those 3-6-year-olds. Engage with the world as a little kid might—exploring with curiosity and wonder. What do you discover or rediscover in this process?
