A Reflection from Terry

Episode 3: Good for You, Aging with Humor & Wisdom

“Why should I fear? When was I less by dying?” – Rumi

Here we are, once again confronted with paradox—invited, yet again, to risk embracing it. The realm of the soul and spirit is filled with paradox. Inevitably, a part of us protests, asking: Which one is it, then? Is it this? Or is it that? Frustratingly—and intriguingly—the answer is: Both.

This story, like many others in our Stories and Other Things Holy series, uses humor as a doorway to deeper insight. We invite you to laugh with us as we walk through this doorway together, exploring the mystery, challenge, fear, and gift of facing our inevitable diminishment—of becoming less, of aging.

  1. Reflect on Your Response
Did any part of the story—or the discussion that followed—move you? Comfort you? Surprise you? Delight you? Provoke or nourish you? Take some time to sit with this feeling and explore its meaning in your experience.
  2. Notice and Honor Aging Around You
As you go about your day, notice anyone you encounter who may be a bit (or a lot) further along in the aging process. Take a moment to hold them quietly in prayer, and then, in your heart, gently whisper: Here I come. Many find this to be a tender and thought-provoking exercise for the soul.
  3. Contemplate Your Own Aging
Find some pictures of yourself from your younger years, and then look at some more recent photos. Take a “long, loving look” at these images, noticing your reactions to the changes over time. Then say to yourself: Good for you.
