An Advent Reflection
on Surprise and Grace

Advent is often described as a time of preparation, but as we explored in this week’s episode, it’s also a time of surprise—a “surprise party” for the incarnation. This season reminds us that while God is always present, Advent invites us to see, notice, and proclaim that presence with fresh eyes and open hearts.

In Greg Boyle’s moving story about his mother, who smiled and said, “You’re here!” as she woke from a fragile moment, we glimpse the essence of Advent. It’s about learning to greet God with the same shock, joy, and gratitude—realizing anew that He is here, and has always been here.

And yet, the practice of seeing God’s presence can be challenging. The season of Advent is often filled with busyness, worry, and even isolation. But perhaps that’s why we need this time—to slow down, to reflect, and to prepare. We are invited to shift from waiting for God to recognizing God already with us.

Many advent songs and prayers express a deep longing akin to the 'Come by here' appeal of Kumbaya. And though it might seem redundant or unnecessary—since God is always near—this longing stirs something essential within us. It opens our eyes to a grace that surrounds us, even in the mundane or difficult moments.

This week, let’s lean into the surprise of Advent. Let’s prepare our hearts to wake up on Christmas morning with the same wonder and gratitude, ready to say, “You’re here!”

Grace-ercises

  1. Reflect on Your Response
Did any part of the story move you? Comfort you? Surprise you? Awaken something within? Where in your daily life have you caught glimpses of God’s presence, even when you weren’t actively looking?
  2. Barriers to Grace?
What are the distractions or worries that make it hard for you to recognize God’s nearness? How might you release them?
  3. Trust and Expectation
In moments of prayer this week, practice saying “Come by here” with the joyful expectation of realizing God’s already present love.
