A Divine Paradox:
God's Intimate Presence

This Advent season, our Stories and Other Things Holy episodes have explored an astounding truth: that the Divine Sovereign of the universe chose to become intimately present within every facet of creation. In this week's reflection, we dive even deeper into this mystery.

When theologians speak of the "Scandal of the Particular," they point to the radical way God enters into the most specific details of human experience. Rachel Held Evans captures this beautifully and boldly: "Before Jesus fed us with the bread and wine—the body and blood—he needed a woman to say: 'This is my body given for you.'"

This profound insight invites us to see God's presence not just in grand cosmic events, but in the raw, tender moments of human experience. The Creator of all chose to begin His earthly journey dependent on a young woman's brave "yes"—perhaps the most intimate demonstration of divine love imaginable.

As we near the end of our Advent journey together, may we find the courage to whisper our own "Amen" to this beautiful paradox. Thank you for walking with us through these contemplative weeks. Stay tuned as we prepare to celebrate the fullness of Christmas joy!

Grace-ercises

  1. The Gift of Self
Take a quiet moment to sit with Rachel Held Evans' powerful words: "This is my body, given for you." Like Mary's brave response to divine love, where might you be called to offer yourself in service of something greater? What small acts of generosity could become sacred opportunities?
  2. Finding God in the Details
The Divine often shows up in unexpected places—a shared meal, a moment of laughter, even our struggles. Where do you notice God's presence in the ordinary rhythm of your days? Consider keeping a simple journal of these "particular" encounters.
  3. Making Room
Sometimes the greatest gifts require us to let go first. Is there something you're being invited to release—perhaps a worry, an expectation, or a carefully laid plan—to make space for new life to enter? What would it mean to trust that deeply?

As Christmas draws near, may you find courage to say "yes" to love's invitations, knowing you're held in the same tender grace that once cradled the divine in human form.
